Utah USA

Expert Opinion

"Home to the 'Greatest Snow on Earth' Utah resorts receives up to 500” of the lightest, driest powder in the World - really the Powder Mecca of North America."

Our expert James Rivers

The majority of the skiing is within 3 adjacent canyons of which the main places to stay are Park City, Solitude and Snowbird, only 45 minutes drive from each other. You can therefore base yourself in any resort and then use it as a base to explore all 7 resorts on the area lift passes.

park city skiing holidaysPark City is the main “ski town” in the area and has the biggest selection of accommodation for all budgets, which why it is the most popular place to stay. There is a huge array of terrain on your door-step and it has all the charms of an old silver mining town but with the amenities of a modern resort town.

the canyons skiing holidays Deer Valley, Park City and The Canyons ski resorts all run along the same ridge line, so whilst you can throw a snowball between than, they are all owned by separate companies and so are not inter-linked. The complimentary town shuttle works really well however and no matter where you stay in the valley, you can easily access any of these mountain resorts.

Solitude holidays by ski safari The 'Big Cottonwood Canyon' is where Solitude and Brighton are based, with only 200ms between their bases. This is the prettiest canyon and really the least developed, so tends to be quieter than the others. The new resort village in Solitude is the perfect place to stay for people who like a quiet and cosy ski escape.

snowbird skiing holidaysThe 'Little Cottonwood Canyon' is the base of Snowbird and Alta and is arguably the best place to ski in the world, with awesome terrain and the highest snowfall in North America. Alta is skier only whilst Snowbird welcomes both skiers and boarders. Snowbird has the majority of the resort accommodation, but it is a relatively expensive place to stay compared to Park City.

As all the canyons' mouths meet at Salt Lake City - you can choose to stay in the city and easily access all of them from there. This is really the cheapest way to ski as much as possible, but lacks the winter resort charm.

Utah 'Need to Knows'

Ski Utah Interconnect – this is a unique back country day trip that crosses all 3 Canyons, starting from Deer Valley, through to Snowbird. It uses a cross between the various resort’s lift systems as well as some simple backcountry traversing. This is a once in a life time experience and you don’t need to be an expert skier/rider to do it – just have a lot of energy and a sense of adventure.

Nightlife in Utah – it is complete myth that Utah is a dry state with no access to alcohol. Yes it is a Mormon state, but then so is Nevada which has Las Vegas! Park City particularly is a very cosmopolitan resort with loads of bars and a number of night clubs and Liquor Stores. The one strange rule is that to get a drink in a bar you simply have to get a “membership”. As you go in, show you driving license, leave your address, pay your $3 membership fee and go wild!

Ski Safaris:

The Utah & Las Vegas Ski Safari is a popular choice for people wanting a true taste of the US. This is a fantastic road trip from Utah to Las Vegas passing through some of the country’s most famous national parks including: Moab, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell and Grand Canyon.

As many flights route via Salt Lake City, you can easily do multi-centre holidays with Sun Valley, Big Sky and Jackson Hole.
