Skiing holidays to
Steamboat USA

Expert Opinion

"After working a season here, Steamboat is one of my favourite ski resorts. Why? Because it has a locals' feel about the place and a Wild West flavour which comes from the town's ranching heritage. Steamboat is home of the lightest, driest Champagne powder plus the views of Yampa Valley are stunning."

"Wow! What a fabulous time we had in Steamboat! We skiied every day of the 7 days we were there. The accommodation we stayed in at Trappeurs was in the Champagne Lodge. The condo was stunning and had plenty of hanging space. The decor was tasteful with just a hint of the wild west about it, the rooms were generous in size with luxury fittings throughout and the beds were very comfortable. The pool and hot tubs just outside our lodge were a great way to round off a day on those amazing slopes. It snowed just about every evening and on some days. One day when it was snowing quite heavily we retreated to a mountain top restaurant to wait for visibility to improve before making a dash for the bottom and the Gondola Pub & Grill where we listened to a fab acoustic guitarist whilst chugging back Avalanche Ale. My husband was in such a chilled (beer fuelled) mood he offered our house to the guitarist and his wife when they come over to England to try and break into the music scene here!

We also found a European-type restaurant (ie. normal portions and no fries anywhere on the premises) in town called Bistro CV. The food was delicious. I would also recommend La Montana, a Mexican restaurant about 2 minutes walk from Trappeurs Crossing, and The Shack (downtown) for breakfast.

The hot springs at Strawberry Park are also well worth a visit. They're several miles out of town, but easy to get to and you drive through gorgeous scenery on the way there. Expect some nudity. Not me though as it was too cold, so I wasn't about to expose any skin to the cold no matter how hot the water was. But the husband did and reports that it was just like an extremely hot bath in slightly smelly water. The setting was fab and everyone there was in high spirits.

Having skiied at most of the Summit County resorts and now Steamboat, Steamboat wins over all of them. It was a bit of a punt choosing Steamboat because everyone liked Breckenridge so much, but by the end of the 2nd day they were thanking me for booking it and saying they preferred the mountain at Steamboat to Breckenridge.

Our condo at Breckenridge, Los Pinos, was also of very good quality and well located.

So all in all it was a very successful trip. Thanks for all your help with organising it. "
