The concept of California as a winter holiday destination may seem strange. It’s likely that images of bronzed, athletic surfers on the beaches of Orange County or the perfectly groomed golf greens of Palm Springs will be more familiar when you hear of the Golden State. However, for the adventurous winter sports fanatic, there are some truly stunning reasons for seeking the real treasures of the High Sierras… and in wintertime they’re more white than gold.
In California you’ll be spoiled for choice, but make time to really savour all aspects of your visit! If you’ve never been there before, then passing through San Francisco or Los Angeles without taking time to visit their quirky neighbourhoods or to shop in their eclectic stores or to eat in their magical restaurants would be a wasted opportunity.
The drive to the mountains from San Francisco, can be as big a treat as your actual stay, so enjoy a stop at one of the unassuming family-run wineries in Lodi, Amador or the Gold Country either on the way out or the return. Here you’ll have the chance to meet and talk to the wine-makers themselves and perhaps learn a little from their passionate enthusiasm for their subject. On the way you’ll pass by Sacramento – the state capital. It’s a short drive off the highway, and here you’ll find some great lunch stops or you may choose to overnight in the Old Town onboard the riverboat – The Delta King.
